If you have a look at our friends page – hidden under the About tab, you’ll see that all the other places that are evaluating indie books for quality have some kind of symbol that author’s place on their books to indicate that they have passed the test.
We have a symbol that means Awesome Indies Approved but at present approved authors can only display this symbol on their website not on their book cover.
This is not to be confused with the pure gold Seal of Excellence symbol that appears on books that have 3 x 5 star reviews from our evaluators and they have confirmed are outstanding in some way.
Why do we presently not allow our authors to place the black and gold symbol on their book covers? Because I feared that if such symbols become widespread, they lose their value, and because I can’t guarantee that books added before July 1st 2012 are up to standard. This is because, at that stage, I tightened the criteria. Before that, Awesome Indies Approved authors could recommend other indie books and I found that someone had abused that privilege. I removed some books from the list at that time, but I can’t guarantee that there aren’t some here from before that date (a rough guess of when the tightening up occurred) that don’t deserve to be here.
However, things have changed.
As mentioned above, other evaluation websites do place symbols on their book covers so perhaps our authors are at a disadvantage. If readers look for a symbol on a book cover to ensure quality, then we should have one.
I could ask authors to individually ask for permission to use the symbol on their covers and check if I have a record of their application. I could request another review of those that I don’t have a record of because I didn’t keep records in the early days.
Given all that, lets have a vote. The poll closes on the 5th of August.
