Title: The Metaphysical Double Life of Eri Lane
Author: Jocelyn Nora Moore
Genre: Young adult paranormal fantasy
The Metaphysical Double Life of Eri Lane is young adult paranormal fantasy with a difference. It’s not about vampires, werewolves, fairies or witches, it’s about Awakes, those who can enter the dream world in their own bodies and who are entrusted to keeping the dream and waking world’s separate.
Eri is intense, always tells the truth, and knows things she shouldn’t, that’s because she and her gay best friend, Malcolm are Awakes. Every night, instead of sleeping, they enter the dream world and mend any tears that develop between the worlds. If the boundary breaks down, the human race will go insane.
It’s a fascinating concept, as is the dream world that the author creates. I love the descriptions of the cracks between the worlds that start appearing while Eri and Mathew are going about their ordinary waking life. Those cracks shouldn’t be there and things are happening in the dream world that shouldn’t be affecting the real world, but they are and Eri and Mathew may be the only people who can save the world from madness.
Not only is the book highly imaginative and well written and constructed, but it also gives insights into why bullies bully, a topic that interests me greatly because of my soon to be published novella on the same theme.
I give this book 5 stars and a place in the Awesome Indies listing.
