What is your latest novel called and what is it about?:
Caged: Love and Treachery on the High Seas. It’s a homoerotic, historical fantasy, romance novel about pirates. Sort of.
Really it’s just a character-development story set against a backdrop of Golden Age-era piracy. The characters could have just as easily been bootleggers or lawyers, but I have a real love of pirates and it was an excuse to write about ships and the sea. 🙂
I’ll use something that a reviewer wrote because it sums it up the premise pretty well:
“The story begins with the sad life of Jon. His mom died of the weeping plague and his dad died in a fall. Jon is frail and sickly, suffering from migraines and persistent bad dreams. Unsuitable for hard physical labor, Jon’s indifferent stepfather felt his unusual empathic abilities would come in handy to help determine the guilt or innocence of the prisoners locked up in the castle’s dungeon. Jon’s next task is to help discover who is responsible for the brutal murder of a call girl at a local brothel. Suffering from ill health, Jon takes some rest after his investigation and promptly gets kidnapped by the pirate Baltsaros, and his first mate, Tom, who were made aware of Jon’s talents. Baltsaros nurses Jon back to health and asks him to join their crew. Reluctant at first, Jon then sees this as a fresh start.
The three men grow closer, but all are deeply flawed characters with enough negative experiences in their lifetime that cause their relationship to be complicated, turbulent, and downright sexy.
Baltsaros and Tom are not quite what they seem, and Jon learns quickly that lies roll off the captain’s tongue just as easily as his knife shreds flesh. As Jon begins to spend more time with the captain, Tom’s anger and jealousy is aroused… ”
Why is independent publishing important to you? :
Well… the whole game has changed. Self-publishing has come a long way, and the stigma is slowly fading as indie books are making their marks. That is very appealing to me. It’s a new era.
I also don’t like the idea of handing my work over to anyone else. By self-publishing, I’m not locked into any contracts, and I can market my books the way I want to.
If your latest book was made into a film, who would you cast as the main characters?:
That’s easy. Mads Mikkelsen would play Baltsaros, Joseph Gordon-Levitt would play Jon, and Tom Hardy would play Tom. Nicolas Winding Refn would direct it.
I know, I know – JGL and Tom are both a little old for the parts, but a guy could wish, eh?
When and where is the most inapropriate/bizarre time you’ve gotten a burst of inspiration to write? What did you do?:
When I have company over is the worst. Thankfully the folks I hang out with are really understanding of my bursts of creativity and are used to raiding my library for stuff to read while I jot/sketch something to flesh out fully at a later time. At least with painting, I can talk to people at the same time. Writing is a different deal. I haven’t yet had to kick anyone out due to a need-to-write-now buzz, but it’s been less than a year that I’ve been writing, so it may happen at some point. My friends will just have to forgive me.
Do you ever read novels more than once? If so, give us the name of one and tell us why you reread it.
Yes! I must have re-read Anne Rice’s Cry to Heaven at least ten times now. There’s just something about the relationship between Tonio and Guido that just does something for me. It’s angsty and raw and I absolutely love it. I tend to like her books in general; they’re rich in description which is something that I need to keep me interested in a book.
Do you have other creative outlets or skills? What are they?:
I’m a painter. I do multimedia portraits of people like Schopenhauer (dig those chops!), Nietzsche… and Hunter S. Thompson. These days I find myself using my tablet to do digital portraits more and more often. I’m also a graphic designer and do freelance web design.
